The
Otsuka Group was established in 1921 by Mr.
Busaburo Otsuka in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture
in Japan. They built a strong reputation in
the area of intravenous solutions which was
widely used in hospitals all over Japan.
In 1964, Otsuka
Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (OPC) was founded.
A sales company at first, the company soon
established its own factory in 1970.
With
the objective of developing new pharmaceutical
products, Otsuka set up its own R & D
the following year.
Akihiko Otsuka, in his determination to go
global by 1980 gave the laboratory an English
motto: ‘80 World Famous Otsuka. From
the beginning, the company had its sights
to make its presence recognized in the global
market.
The vision became
a reality. Otsuka today is a worldwide business
expanding in the United States, Europe and
all over Asia including the Philippines.
Dr. William
Torres, President of UST CeDRES and Head
Investigator of the study concluded that
the generic test drug Cilostazol Clazol

One's Life Program
Stigmatization in our society regarding mental
illness is still a prevalent issue not to mention
the poor regard to mental health. This hinders
patients from seeking treatment at an early
stage of their illness. The challenge is how
we could encourage patients to seek treatment
in order to have better outcomes.
The
Light One’s Life: A Quality of Life Program
is one of the advocacy programs of Otsuka Philippines
in collaboration with the Philippine Psychiatric
Association. It offers a holistic patient-oriented
program which aims to:
• Provide better awareness about mental
health
• Increase patient consultation rate
• Help patients sustain their therapy
thru discount privileges
Stroke
is a medical emergency. Every second counts.
Stroke, specifically ischemic stroke, is a result
of blocked blood vessels that hinders the supply
of oxygen in the brain. Stroke results to permanent
brain damage and disability, which is why it
is important to recognize one when it occurs.
Experts believe that it is better to manage
potential blood vessel blockage through constant
physician check-ups and medications.
Cilostazol (Pletaal) is an anti-platelet agent
(an agent that reduces blood clotting) that
prevents blood vessel blockage and may be
used to prevent stroke from occurring. Drugs
like cilostazol should only be taken with
a doctor's prescription.
PAD
: More than just leg pain It's 3:00 pm and you get
out of your office for a quick stretching and
walking. Then, you suddenly feel pain in your
thigh and numbness in the leg as you walk, but
the symptoms ease during rest. You may not worry
about it, but these could be symptoms of Peripheral
Arterial Disease (PAD).
PAD,
a condition that is especially prevalent among
those with diabetes, refers to the partial
or complete blockage of major arteries outside
the heart that supply blood to other important
areas of the body, such as the brain, kidneys,
arms and legs.
Symptoms
include pain in the calf or thigh, discomfort,
fatigue, and numbness in the legs when walking
then eases during rest. One of the most common
symptoms of PAD is intermittent claudication
(IC). Patients with IC feel numbness and fatigue
in the legs and this may affect their walking
distance.
In addition to diet
and exercise, drugs are prescribed to relieve
symptoms of PAD and prevent further complications.
Cilostazol is one of the drugs recommended
to treat IC as it allows patients to increase
their walking distance. In a study comparing
the effects of cilostazol and placebo (sugar
pill) on walking distance, the maximal walking
distance of cilostazol patients improved by
44 to 50 percent compared to a 21-percent
improvement achieved by patients taking placebo.
Malnutrition
is an increasingly recognized complication of
chronic liver disease that has important prognostic
implications. Malnourished patients with cirrhosis
have higher rate of complications and overall,
an increased mortality rate. Malnutrition has
significant implication on liver transplantation;
it has been shown that patients with poor nutritional
status before transplantation have increased
complications and higher mortality rates postoperatively.
Screening all patients with chronic liver disease
for nutritional abnormalities can identify those
at risk of developing preventable complications.
The initiation of nutritional therapy has the
potential to reduce the risk of complication
and to improve the overall mortality rate.
Protein-Energy
Malnutrition (PEM), a condition of body
wasting related to dietary deficiency
of calories and protein, is found in 65%
to 90% of patients with advanced liver
disease, and in almost 100% of candidates
for liver transplantation. There is a
direct correlation between progression
of liver disease and the severity of malnutrition.
Malnutrition
develops in patients with cirrhosis irrespective
of the aetiology of their disease and
occurs in roughly equal incidence in patients
with alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver
disease. Malnutrition is not typically
a complication of an acute liver injury,
but manifest with progression to liver
failure.
